What is a good computer for a programming class and MIS major?

For a workhorse computer like this will likely be, I'd recommend getting something refurbished. Dell's refurbished machines usually start about $400 for a quality inspiron/latitude model. More important than brand is power. using VB2010, I'd recommend at least 512 M of Ram, a gig would be better. Dual core processor will allow multitasking during heavy compiling/processing. If you're going to program on it, don't get a small keyboard--consider widescreen as the keyboards are wider as well (your wrists will thank you).
